Simple RV Shoe Storage Solution

I want to share a quick and simple change we made inside our travel trailer that ended up having a surprisingly big impact on how we camp.

From Shower to Closet

A while back, we decided to convert our trailer’s unused shower into a closet. Since we never used it for showering, it made sense to take advantage of the space for storage. It worked great for hanging up clothes and even storing shoes at the bottom.

The only downside? That closet is all the way at the back of the trailer. Every time we needed shoes, we’d walk through the whole trailer, which wasn’t ideal—especially with kids.

We Needed a Shoe Spot Near the Door

We realized it would be so much more convenient to have a spot for shoes right by the trailer’s entry door. So we made it happen—and it turned out to be much simpler than we expected.

Our trailer has two storage bins at the front, located under the main bed. We were regularly using one of them, but the other mostly held things we didn’t need often. We decided to move that less-used bin underneath the kids’ bunk beds. It slid right in with no modifications—just a quick cleaning—and fit perfectly.

And as a bonus, the kids now use that bin as a step stool to climb into their bunks!

Creating the Shoe Storage Area

With that bin out of the way, we freed up a nice spot right next to the door. To make it work for shoes, we added a rubber mat to the floor. There are lots of boot trays and mats out there, but we found one that’s actually made to go under a kitchen sink. It was the perfect size and had raised edges to catch dirt and debris from our shoes.

To make the most of the space, we also added a small, adjustable shoe rack. We expanded it to fit the area we had, and it holds just the right amount for our family of four.

How It’s Working So Far

This simple setup has worked great during our trips. The shoe rack stays put whether we’re traveling empty or with shoes on it. Nothing has tipped over or shifted while towing, and when we arrive at camp—or come back home—it looks exactly how we left it.

The new shoe spot has made it so much easier to keep our trailer floors clean, and everyone in the family appreciates having a convenient place to drop their shoes.

One Small Thing I’d Change

If I were to do it again, I might pick a different color for the mat. We went with gray, but I think black might look better in the space. What do you think? Let me know in the comments—would you stick with gray, or go with black or a lighter gray?
