We went on a family camping trip to Pomo Campground in Fort Bragg, CA. We stayed at site 79.

The Campsite

Campsite 79 is a large pull-through site shared with campsite 77. The first camper there would pull straight through into site 77 and then the second camper backs in at site 79. Because these two sites are shared there is lots of space and we had no problems parking our 20 foot rig. Site 79 even has hook-ups on both sides so you have lots of options when deciding where to park.

The site felt private. In reality you are right next to people but the campground does a good job of providing the illusion of seclusion. The sites are separated by large hedges which really does help with privacy.

This campground has full hook-ups. We didn’t have cell service through Verizon but the campground did have free WiFi that worked from our site.

The Best Campsites

All of our favorite campsites here are for groups of at least two rigs. This isn’t the type of campground we typically camp at. We tend to go to state parks and national forests. Not full hook-up RV resorts. But as far as RV parks go, this is one of our favorites, though we only come when we’re with other campers who need full hook-ups.

  • Sites 5 & 11
    • These two sites back up to each other and would work well together.
  • Sites 29 & 30
    • These sites are surrounded from neighbors by hedges but not from each other so they would work well together.
  • Sites 38 & 39
    • These sites are surrounded from neighbors by hedges but not from each other so they would work well together.
  • Sites 41 & 42
    • These sites are surrounded from neighbors by hedges but not from each other so they would work well together.
  • Sites 63 & 64
    • These sites are surrounded from neighbors by hedges but not from each other so they would work well together.
  • Sites 77 & 79
    • This is our favorite area to be. It is a large space that feels private and works great to camp with another group.
  • Sites 77, 78, & 79
    • If you need to accommodate three groups, site 78 works great combined with 77 and 79. Site 78 is off to the side but there is a path and a gap in the hedges to join the group in sites 77 and 79.

The Activities

This campground is in Fort Bragg and there are tons of activities to do in Fort Bragg.

One of our favorites is the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens. The Botanical Gardens are just across the street from the campground. You wouldn’t want to walk because you do have to cross highway 1, but they are very close. And in the winter they put on a Festival of Lights show. We were able to attend that event and got to see the garden decorated with Christmas lights. It really was beautiful.

For other activities in Fort Bragg you can go to the beach. We like to go to Noyo beach which is closeby. There are also lots of shops downtown and some delicious ice cream at Cowlick’s Handmade Ice Cream. There is also the Skunk Train that you can ride.

The Dog-Friendly Hiking

Fort Bragg has lots of dog-friendly trails. The Botanical Gardens across from the campground are dog-friendly. We love walking our dog through the gardens. There is a trail that goes all the way to the ocean and then back. (The one exception, is sometimes they don’t allow dogs during events, such as during the Festival of Lights.)

Another option is at MacKerricher State Park. MacKerricher is on the other end of Fort Bragg, but it’s a small town so it is still close. There is a boardwalk trail on the beach at MacKerricher that is completely dog-friendly.

And lastly, the Otis R. Johnson Wilderness Trail is right in the town of Fort Bragg and is a beautiful dog-friendly trail. There are ferns and redwood trees. You really don’t feel like you are in the middle of town when you’re on the trail. It’s a great spot to go with your dog.

The Beer

Anytime we go to Fort Bragg we love getting some beer from Overtime Brewery. North Coast Brewery is also from Fort Bragg and is another great choice.

The Recap

Pomo campground offers many sites that have the illusion of seclusion and it is in a great location. It’s a great option when you need to have full hook-ups.
